In the recent heat waves, about 45% of the world's coral reefs have died. In an attempt to save the reefs, the Design-Tech laboratory at Technion has been working in collaboration with researchers in marine biology to develop technologies and methods for creating structural formations from which alternative reefs and corals will develop in suitable environments.
3D printing in a natural ceramic material allows for the creation of various complex shapes, adapted to the biological needs of the reef’s environment.
Research shows that fish, animals, and reef-building corals are attracted to the printed reefs.
